If you are a nursing student in Nigeria, you might be wondering if you will have to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program after graduating from your school of nursing.

There are two main types of nursing programs in Nigeria: the Basic Nursing Program and the Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) Program.

The Basic Nursing Program is a three-year diploma course that is offered by schools of nursing affiliated to teaching hospitals or state ministries of health.

The graduates of this program are eligible to register as Registered Nurses (RN) with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). However, they are not considered as university graduates and therefore, they are not eligible for NYSC.

The BNSc Program is a five-year degree course that is offered by universities or colleges of nursing accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the NMCN.

  Consequences of Missing NYSC Community Development Service (CDS)

The graduates of this program are eligible to register as Registered Nurses (RN) and Registered Midwives (RM) with the NMCN. They are also considered as university graduates and therefore, they are eligible for NYSC.

So, if you want to go for NYSC after school of nursing, you have to enroll in the BNSc Program or upgrade your diploma to a degree through a direct entry or a part-time program. This will enable you to obtain a university degree and qualify for NYSC.
